American Samoa Allows Cannery Reopening After Federal Advice
American Samoa’s lieutenant governor, Talauega Eleasalo Ale, said the territorial government took federal advice before allowing StarKist Samoa tuna cannery to re-open.
The cannery, the largest priviate sector employer in the territory, returned to operations last Friday after being closed for two weeks due to the community spread of COVID-19.
As of March 12th the total of COVID cases has reached 527, with 54 having recovered.

ISSF Focuses on Advancing Sustainability of Tuna Fisheries
The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) has released its 2021 annual report, which this year it titled “Transparent Accountability Across Tuna Fisheries.”
SSF is committed to achieving sustainable tuna fisheries through work with industry partners and advocacy appeals directed at regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs).
“The theme we’ve chosen for this year’s report – fostering greater transparency and accountability – could apply to ISSF’s work in any year. But it seems especially relevant now, as we emerge from a pandemic that underscored our dependence on science and responsibilities to each other,” ISSF President Susan Jackson said. “Openness and responsiveness are embedded in our organizational DNA: ISSF exists because eight forward-thinking seafood companies in 2009 were willing to put themselves on the line to learn from fisheries scientists about how to become better stewards of the sea.” Continue reading here (Source: SeafoodSource).
Fiji’s Fisheries Ministry in Discussions With Advanced Bilateral Partners to Secure Tuna
Fiji’s Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau says there is ongoing work being carried out with advanced and developed bilateral partners for fishing fleet to meet PAFCO’s albacore demands.
“Once Fiji gains access to PNA (Parties to Nauru Agreement) waters, we will need to have a fleet that has the capacity to secure raw materials,” Mr Koroilavesau said.
“With ongoing discussions, we are looking to secure Purse seines vessels and mother ships – that joint venture arrangement with our bilateral partners. This will help us secure tuna from outside Fiji.” Continue reading here (Source: The Fiji Times).
Inflation Dents US Fresh Seafood Sales, Though Frozen and Canned Sales Up
Rising seafood prices and consumer concerns about overall inflation in the U.S. continued to harm fresh seafood sales in April, according to new data.
However, frozen seafood sales rose 2.8 percent and shelf-stable seafood sales jumped 9.6 percent for the month, compared to April 2021, according to IRI and 210 Analytics.
Fresh seafood prices jumped an average of 13.5 percent per unit in April, higher than the 12.1 percent they experienced increase in March. The average price for finfish jumped to over USD 10.00 (EUR 9.50) per unit – a spike of 20.9 percent – while fresh shellfish prices rose 2.3 percent, IRI and 210 Analytics found. Present Tuna Fleet Cannot Sustain PAFCO’s Albacore Demand
Fiji’s present tuna fishing fleet cannot sustain PAFCO’s albacore demand, says Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau.
And to address that, he said the ministry had put out plans to help secure raw materials for PAFCO with the support of line agencies and plans.
He noted Fong Chun Formosa’s (FCF) acquisition of Bumble Bee in January 2020, which he said strengthened the basic class sustainability and social responsibility efforts and put FCF in an advantageous position for sustained growth and leadership throughout the tuna and seafood industry.

Slow progress on improving tuna management is prompting the marketplace to unite and speak out on a global scale, according to the Global Tuna Alliance.
