Sainsbury’s has stepped up its commitment to sustainable fish sourcing as all its own-brand tuna will now be 100% Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified.

As the first Big 4 grocer to make the pledge, Sainsbury’s is also moving to 100% pole and line caught tuna across its ‘By Sainsbury’s’ products, as this typically has a much lower environmental impact and supports local fisherman employment.

The supermarket has since reduced the price of its own-brand canned tuna, having included it in Aldi Price Match for the first time as almost 70% of UK shoppers eat the fish.

As of today (24 May), Sainsbury’s four pack tuna chunks will be available at £2.69, down from £4.20, while its single 145g cans can be purchased for 72p each.

Sainsbury’s food commercial director Rhian Bartlett said: “We know that customers want to eat responsibly sourced, high-quality food and we’re committed to helping them buy more sustainable products at affordable prices.”

“We’re really proud that Sainsbury’s has become the only big four supermarket to carry the MSC certification and move to pole and line caught across our own-brand canned tuna and that by investing more, we’re not only supporting our suppliers and fisherman, but we’ve also been able to reduce the cost of own-brand canned tuna for customers.”
